Weaving French Into Mandarin And Cantonese -
Uncommon Allies In The Quest For Multilingualism

In our household, where English reigns supreme like a tyrant king, balancing between major and minority languages can feel like trying to juggle flaming torches while riding a unicycle. But in the midst of this circus, the recent addition of French (thanks, Canada!) alongside Mandarin and Cantonese for my son, Henry, has turned our linguistic juggling act into a surprisingly entertaining sideshow. Who knew that introducing French would help our undertone languages stand up to the mighty English in the following ways?

A Monolingual Father's Added Role in Multilingual Parenting

The protagonist of this tale is my wonderful husband who predominantly communicates in English, but can recall fragments of French he learned during his time in school. He emerges as the unexpected hero in this narrative. Now, imagine this scene: there he is, squinting at a list of French vocabulary words, as he grapples with the task of remembering whether "fromage" signifies a variety of cheese, or possibly, it refers to an exotic dance movement. It's a humorous situation, but it's these moments that cultivate deeper bonds.

Reviving his knowledge of French and helping Henry in reviewing vocabulary has turned into a recurring scenario that is entertaining enough to be the centre of a sitcom episode. These experiences serve a dual purpose. Not only does it provide an opportunity for him to revive his dormant French language skills, but it also strengthens their father-son relationship.

His attempts to remember the French he learned in school, his amusing confusion over words, and our combined effort to help Henry with vocabulary - all of it has turned into a fun-filled journey. This journey, filled with shared laughter, learning, and companionship, encapsulates the essence of a sitcom episode. It's these moments that make language learning enjoyable and relationships stronger.

Use of Bilingual Materials

Combining multiple languages in communication is similar to the process of creating the perfect cocktail. The secret of success lies in understanding and selecting the appropriate ingredients. During our investigation of the free workshops offered by Home Depot, we unsurprisingly discovered resources available in both English and French.

While it's not surprising to find such bilingual materials in a place like Home Depot, we had never cared about the French version before Henri started his Core French program.

Encouraged by my prompting, Henry found himself excitedly delving into the French instructions as if he was enjoying delicious candies. These opportunities added an unforeseen yet fascinating layer to his journey of language learning. It was akin to the new and delightful experience of discovering bacon in your pancake syrup.

This proactive combination, similar to the blending of different languages, introduces a distinct taste and complexity that one couldn't have predicted. Just as the sweetness of syrup could be enriched by the salty, smoky taste of bacon, Henry's comprehension of language was enhanced by the integration of French in a practical, everyday scenario.

The fusion of languages, in this case, added a unique dimension to his linguistic understanding, just like the unexpected pairing of syrup and bacon adds a surprising depth to a simple breakfast dish.

Enhancement Through Consecutive English-French Exposures

Our expeditions to cities renowned for their bilingual nature, like Ottawa and Montreal, have transformed into epic adventures teeming with linguistic hurdles and revelations of culture. Picture my companion Henry, his eyes as large as dinner plates, struggling to decipher the enigma of bilingual signage and eavesdropped dialogues.

Henry's comprehension of French, particularly when it comes to its more complicated, verbose structure, is still a work in progress. Nonetheless, he is constantly striving to enhance his proficiency and achieve fluency.

Although he grapples with it occasionally, I consistently urge him to stay engaged and vigilant when he finds himself in situations where English and French discourses blend together.

Being in such circumstances is akin to being strapped into a thrilling linguistic roller coaster ride – it's a nerve-wrecking, adrenaline-fueled journey that pushes his language skills to the extreme.

Concurrently, it can also be a bit disconcerting, similar to the feeling of nausea that can be triggered by an exceptionally turbulent roller coaster ride.

Regardless, each journey, every interaction, and every new French word Henry masters is a stride ahead in his pursuit of bilingualism. These trips are not just about leisurely sightseeing or having a good time, they are about plunging headfirst into a foreign culture and language, continuously learning, and evolving with each fleeting moment.

An Amalgamation of Tales - Fusing Chinese With French

Our storytelling sessions have evolved into a wonderful fusion of diverse cultures, they have transformed into a joyful medley where various traditions intertwine. One day, we find ourselves immersed in the depth and complexity of the Chinese classic, "Journey To The West", narrated in its original language, Mandarin. We're captivated by the thrilling adventures of Sun Wukong and his companions, their tales echoing in our ears, the Mandarin phrases adding an authentic touch to the whole experience. Then, as the sun rises on a new day, our literary journey pivots towards the Western hemisphere.

After that, we were no longer wandering in the ancient landscapes of China, but instead, my husband and Henry find themselves navigating through the intricate world of Victor Hugo's renowned French masterpieces. They dive into the lives of Jean Valjean from Les Misérables or Quasimodo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. They savour the beauty of the French language as it paints vivid images of these timeless classics in our minds. This cultural blend that our storytelling sessions bring to life is akin to watching a blockbuster crossover movie and are a delightful exploration of the world's cultural diversity.

Learning by Teaching

One of the things I absolutely cherish is this delightful little game that I have with Henry, wherein I ask him to share the knowledge he has gained from his Core French classes, but in Cantonese.

There is an irresistible allure in seeing how his face brightens up as he steps into the shoes of a mini instructor, filled with an eagerness to share what he knows. With great attention to detail, he goes on to explain the French salutations or greetings, along with the names of the days of the week in French.

The transformation that comes over him during this process, the sheer dedication and seriousness he exhibits, it's quite reminiscent of a magician wowing his audience by revealing his tricks.

Moreover, this small activity serves a more practical purpose as well. It's a subtle technique that I use to make sure that he's not merely physically attending his French classes, but is also mentally involved in them.

So, in essence, it benefits us both in two ways - Henry gets a chance to review and reinforce his command over both French and Cantonese. It's a situation where both of us benefit, akin to the Chinese proverbial saying of killing two birds with one stone!
