Playing Memory Games to Train Chinese Character Recognition

Many of you may have already incorporated memory-boosting activities into your children's Chinese language learning journey. Today, I'm thrilled to share our recent home learning adventure!

To kick things off, I carefully shuffled a set of flashcards numbered from 1 to 10 and challenged my son to arrange them in the correct numerical sequence. Afterwards, we delved into practicing antonyms like "above and below," "big and small" during our initial round. Each participant had to vocalize the paired words in both Cantonese and Mandarin, with a playful twist – if my son stumbled over the pronunciation of any word, I offered a gentle hint.

Upon encountering words or phrases that he had trouble with, I took the chance to reintroduce them, guiding him meticulously through the pronunciation process while simultaneously incorporating them into a relevant narrative.

As we delved into the second round of our learning session, we explored common day-to-day vocabulary such as "apple," "friends," and "television," all of which were illustrated in the image we were referencing.

Before initiating each memory game, we committed a considerable amount of time to revisiting the characters collectively, solidifying his understanding of the material. Considering that my son is currently in the process of learning both Cantonese and Mandarin, I alternated my requests for him to read aloud in each language, to ensure a balanced exposure.

Having grown up and received my education in Hong Kong, I am fortunate to have possessed a native proficiency that enables me to provide seamless support and guidance to him during these sessions, all of which he finds highly enjoyable.

Depending on the specific language goals set by your family, as well as the resources available, these activities can be customized to focus solely on Cantonese, Mandarin, or any other desired language. I'm grateful to mention that the flashcards we used were generously gifted by a friend residing in Hong Kong.

Each card prominently features a traditional character in the middle, accompanied by its Mandarin pinyin representation in smaller text, located at the top left corner.
